Escola Secundária de Palmela, Palmela
PoRTUGAL

We are a small Village school. We have students from 7th grade to 12th grade , which means that we have students from 12/13 years old to 17/18 years old. 7th,8th and 9th grades are part of what we call third cycle and 10th, 11th and 12th grades are secondary level. We also have vocational studies in the secondary level. We have about 90 teachers and about 900 students. The school exists, in the actual place, since 1975 but the buildings are younger . We don't have a gymnasium because the one we had had to be demolished and there's no money to build another. That's our major problem. Our Village, Palmela is about 30km from the capital, Lisbon and closed to Setúbal (about 7Km). The sea is near, but we have to go to Setúbal to go to the beach. The main products in our region are cheese, and wine but we also have industry like volkswagen. We had other industries connected with auto market but with the economic crisis lots of small industries have closed. As a consequence there are some unemployment and that has consequences in students lifes. Palmela has a music school and we have classes only with students that are learning music (one is participating in the project). There are several clubs, Maths Club, ICT club, Health club...It's a quiet and nice school that we are trying to improve, motivating students with projects like "Time Capsule".

The project coordinator is our math teacher-Helena Capela.
